Robyn Killebrew witnessed many lives her mother touched as a teacher and she says it was always her dream to follow in her mother’s footsteps.

She teaches two levels of algebra and math required for the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) and the American College Test (ACT), both needed for admission to many U.S. colleges and universities. The standardized nature of these timed tests creates a teaching challenge.

She approaches this by engaging the students in competitive relays requiring them to answer questions quickly and correctly to help their team win the relay. This hones their math problemsolving speed. On a timed test, this ability has real applications and yields results. Math scores for her students taking the PSAT increased an average of 25 points and helped four students in becoming National Merit Finalists.

State mandates require that algebra classes are taught more traditionally. But she tries to create a comfortable environment and then drives herself to teach “bell to bell,” come early and stay late.

“My responsibility is to make sure that each student gains the knowledge needed to score at his or her highest potential,” she said. “My motivation is to prove that I am willing to work harder than they do and show them enthusiasm and passion.”

Killebrew’s techniques work. “One hundred percent of my Algebra I students not only passed the state test, they scored either proficient or advanced as well.”
