Wash the red ink out of laundering operations

Innovations — Magnolia Manor purchased and installed equipment for an open-loop ozonated laundering system. In an ozonated laundry system, ozone (O3) is produced on-site and added to wash and rinse water before it is used in standard commercial washing equipment. The ozone replaces nearly all of the detergents and other traditional laundry chemicals used for cleaning, drastically reducing the amount spent on those costly chemicals (only a small amount of supplemental enzyme-based cleaner is added for certain types of oils and soils).

Ozone cleans effectively at a much lower temperature than traditional laundry chemicals (90° to 100°F versus 140° to 150°F), so ozonated laundering slashes water heating costs and also extends the life of many fabrics. In addition, unlike traditional cleaning chemicals, ozone leaves no residue in laundered items or discharged wash and rinse water. As a result, far less water and time is needed for rinsing, reducing water and sewer expenses, and also improving production by shortening laundering cycles. Finally, ozone has exceptional disinfecting and deodorizing properties that produce a fresher smelling, more sanitary wash than traditional laundering methods.

Findings - Ozonated laundering produces enormous savings and other benefits for Magnolia Manor:

• Greatly reduces chemical expenses (67% lower)
• Drastically lowers costs for heating water (90% lower); this savings is five times the cost of the extra electricity used to produce ozone
• Decreases water and sewer expenses (21% lower), closed-loop systems used elsewhere that filter and recycle wash water have shown 52% reductions
• Improves production due to reduced washing times and less sorting (due to lower wash temperatures)
• Produces superior sanitizing and deodorizing due to ozone's ability to destroy bacteria and viruses
• Increases fabric life as a result of less mechanical action and reduced wash temperatures
• Creates greater employee satisfaction through cooler working conditions

Based on its savings, Magnolia Manor can recoup its ozonation equipment investment in about 3 years (even faster if Magnolia Manor increases its average 48 hours per week of laundry operations).
