Kemper County IGCC Project

The Kemper County IGCC will use state-of-the-art electric power plant technology called integrated gasification combine cycle (IGCC). Simply put, IGCC turns coal into a cleaner burning gas.

  • Technology - The Kemper County IGCC Project will use the most advanced gasification technology in the world. By providing carbon capture and sequestration, the facility will lead the way to a lower-carbon electricity production.

  • Carbon capture - The IGCC technology allows initial CO2 capture of 65 percent.

  • Fuel diversity – This technology uses lignite coal, a largely untapped natural resource in Kemper County. Without lignite, Mississippi will be forced to rely more upon high-priced natural gas to meet our electricity needs.

  • Fewer emissions – IGCC has lower particulate, sulfur dioxide and mercury emissions than traditional pulverized coal technology.

  • Climate change – This coal gasification technology, along with carbon capture and sequestration technology, can be part of the climate change solution.
