The Mississippi Public Service Commission announced on November 9 its decision that Mississippi Power has demonstrated that public convenience and necessity requires or will require additional generating capacity and energy as early as 2014.

"We are pleased that the Mississippi Public Service Commission has determined Mississippi Power does have a strong and clear need for new generating capacity to reliably meet our customers' future energy needs," said Mississippi Power President and CEO Anthony Topazi.

"We appreciate the thorough and fair way the Commission conducted Phase I of this hearing process. Our customers' interest has been well served," Topazi said.

"In Phase II of the Commission's hearing process, we look forward to presenting our case to meet this need by building the proposed Kemper County IGCC Project and providing the best possible option of electric service for our customers and the future economy of south Mississippi" he said.

Phase II hearings to determine the Resources and Cost are set for February 1-5, 2010, in Jackson.

A final order is expected by May 1, 2010.
