Solar Lighting


While solar lighting is not available through Mississippi Power at this time, solar lighting options are in development to help meet customer's unique location or sustainability requirements and provide quality nighttime illumination.

Pole mounted solar lighting systems consist of the following components:

  • Solar array or panel for collecting energy from the sun during the day
  • Battery for energy storage
  • Charge Controller or Energy Management device
  • LED light fixture

How solar lighting systems work:

  • The solar panel or array collects energy from the sun during daylight hours.
  • Energy collected is stored in the battery to power the light during nighttime hours.
  • The charge controller or energy management system regulates power input to the battery to prevent overcharging and controls power output to the light. It also regulates and adjusts the amount of power going to the light to ensure that the light will operate under adverse weather conditions such as overcast or rainy days. Timing of operation of the light is also controlled by this component.

Important things to know about solar outdoor lighting:

  • Initial costs for a solar lighting system are higher than a grid connected system and batteries will need to be replaced in approximately five years.
  • Solar lighting is an attractive option for use in remote locations where electric service may not be available or easily provided.
  • Once installed, solar powered lighting incurs no energy costs to operate.
  • To operate properly and provide adequate light levels, a system must be "sized" to determine specifications of system components required (solar panel size, number and size of batteries, most suitable light fixture, pole height and placement, etc.).
  • Since each installation is different, the geographic location of the installation, the specific application (street, parking lot, trail, etc.), light level requirement (foot candles), and the number of hours per night that the light will need to operate must be known to properly "size" the system.
