Energy Efficiency Education Program hits milestone

Mississippi Power’s Energy Efficiency Education Program recently kicked off its 2020-2021 school year by reaching an impressive milestone.

The program recently distributed its 25,000th energy efficiency kit to a student at Northeast Lauderdale Elementary school in Meridian.

“We’re thrilled to have hit this significant milestone,” said Energy Efficiency Education Representative Tamara Proctor. “We’ve been able to engage with 25,000 students in our service territory to teach them the importance of energy efficiency since the program’s inception seven years ago.”

To mark the occasion, one lucky student was singled out from her class and given a certificate as the 25,000th recipient.

The Energy Efficiency Education Program continues to grow despite the COVID-19 pandemic limiting in-person presentations. This semester, the program is using a virtual studio based out of the Bay St. Louis service center.

“Moving to a virtual platform has actually allowed us to connect with more students as it reduces travel times and gives schools more flexibility with scheduling,” said Proctor. “We’re able to conduct more presentations during the school week while still catering to each school’s personalized needs.”

The Energy Efficiency Program is for fourth- and fifth-grade students and teaches them the important role electricity plays in their lives and how they can have a role in making their own homes more energy efficient.

More than 25 elementary schools have showed interest in the new virtual program with 19 of them already booking their presentations for this semester.

“I’m pleased that we were able to adapt so quickly to this new format,” said Proctor. “We’ll continue to use this platform to engage with our students in a safe way and we’re already looking towards hitting our next big milestone.”
