Gulfport, Miss. – Mississippi Power recently kicked off the 10th year of the company’s Energy Efficiency Education Program.
Over the course of a decade, the program has taught thousands of fourth and fifth-graders the importance of energy efficiency and ways to save energy in their daily lives. Students who participate in the program receive free energy efficiency kits, equipped with LED light bulbs and other energy efficient items, to take home and share with their families.
More than 35,000 students have participated and nearly $120,000 in energy efficiency education grants have been awarded to teachers since the program’s inception.
“We’re thrilled to see how this program has grown over the last ten years,” said Energy Efficiency Representative Tamara Proctor. “We’re appreciative of the teachers and students who embrace this program year after year and take these tips back home to their families.”
More than 120 schools across Mississippi Power’s service territory are eligible to participate in the Energy Efficiency Education program and earn grant money for their students. Many elementary schools partner with the company annually to take advantage of the program’s benefits. Students learn tips like making the switch to LED bulbs, finding one hour a day to charge electronics and changing their home’s air filters monthly.
“We know the importance of energy efficiency and the impact it can have on a home’s energy usage,” said Proctor. “This program allows us to start that education young with our elementary students while supporting our local classrooms with the energy efficiency education mini-grant funds.”
North Forrest Elementary in Hattiesburg and West Elementary in Gulfport were the first of many schools Proctor will visit this year. For more information on the program and other Mississippi Power education initiatives, click here.
