Mississippi Power commemorates its centennial year with service projects on 100th day of 2025

Gulfport, Miss. – As Mississippi Power commemorates its centennial year of service in Mississippi, the company is using the 100th day of 2025 to continue giving back to its communities.

Mississippi Power’s employee-led volunteer groups, Community Connection, partnered with local nonprofits across the company’s service territory to determine some of their most pressing needs. Each Community Connection chapter then collected, packaged and delivered 100 items to that organization to support their cause.

“It’s our 100th year of service and the 100th day of 2025, so we are doing something special to mark that occasion across southeast Mississippi,” said Mississippi Power spokesperson Kaila Moran Griffith. “Our Community Connection chapters chose a cause they care about, collected, packaged and then donated these essential supplies to help further that mission. It’s been a rewarding process and a great reminder of the impact we can make together.”

Donations across Mississippi Power’s service territory included:

  • Back Bay Mission, Biloxi: Meal kits for the unhoused that include food, water, silverware and a hygiene kit
  • Backpack Buddies, First Methodist Church, Long Beach: Food donations to support its children’s food insecurity program
  • Backpack Buddies, United Way of the Pine Belt, Laurel: Backpacks to support its children’s food insecurity program
  • Center for Pregnancy Choices, Meridian: Items that include newborn care kits, body wash, shampoo and other essentials for new mothers
  • Humane Society of South Mississippi, Gulfport: Care packages for animals that include homemade tug toys, water bowls, blankets and peanut butter
  • Jackson County Animal Shelter, Gautier: Items that include cleaning supplies, dog and cat food, treats, toys, leashes and collars

“We have greatly increased the number of people who we’re serving, so the donation from Mississippi Power is such a blessing,” said Back Bay Mission Marketing and Development Coordinator Taylor New.   “We could not do what we do without people and organizations like Mississippi Power who support us and believe in our mission.”

Mississippi Power employees worked to collect, assemble and drop off each of the items over the last week to ensure the organizations had their donations by April 10 – the 100th day of 2025.

“We’ve been longtime partners with many of these organizations and try to support their missions as much as we can,” said Pine Belt Community Connection Chapter President Haley Carpenter. “It was really rewarding to not only partner with United Way today, but to have a coordinated effort across the company and support several nonprofits at once.”

Mississippi Power employees are regularly involved in community service projects. In 2024 alone, they completed 110 service projects and more than 4,500 volunteer hours.

Now in its 100th year of service, Mississippi Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company (NYSE: SO), produces safe, reliable and affordable energy for more than 192,000 customers in 23 southeast Mississippi counties.
