Energy Efficiency Education Program kicks off

Mississippi Power enhanced its commitment to energy efficiency and customer service with the approval of eight new programs aimed at promoting energy savings for customers this summer.

One piece of the package, the Energy Efficiency Education Program, which provides education and energy conservation materials to 4th and 5th grade students, kicked off in October.

Tamara Proctor, Energy Efficiency Education representative, is visiting schools across the service territory. On Nov. 12 at Laurel’s Oak Park Elementary School, Proctor discussed energy efficiency with more than 100 students.

“We want to develop smart energy habits early on with these students,” Proctor said. “Hopefully they’ll take some of the lessons we discussed today and have a conversation with their parents when they get home tonight.”

The program consists of a 30-minute presentation that gives an overview of the services Mississippi Power provides, the types of devices that use electricity and describes what energy efficiency is.

“For a lot of these students, this might be the first time they’ve ever thought about energy efficiency,” Proctor said. “I want them to realize that while this is a big concept, some small actions on their part can make a difference.”

Each student that attends the presentation takes home an energy efficiency kit with several CFL bulbs, an LED nightlight and a questionnaire on their family’s energy habits.

If 75 percent of the class returns the questionnaire, they’ll be eligible for a $250 grant from the company.

Proctor hopes to visit more than 100 schools across south Mississippi and impact thousands of students.
