Several Mississippi Power employees, along with a small crew from T&D Solutions, teamed up in September to build and install an osprey nest bed at DuPont’s facility in DeLisle.
The company supplied an 85-foot concrete pole and the equipment and labor to erect the pole on DuPont’s property. The pole includes an attachment at the top that will allow the osprey to build its nest.
“Within 48 hours of the pole being installed, we caught a glimpse of an osprey ‘house shopping’ for a place to build a new nest,” said Belinda Creel, Sustainability team leader at DuPont. “We hope they’ll like the inviting home we built and will choose to raise their family here this nesting season.”
The Mississippi Power crew spent about half a day installing the structure, which weights 17,000 lbs.
“This was a great opportunity for a partnered stewardship project,” Industrial Marketing Specialist Stacey Miles said. “We saw tremendous collaboration from all involved parties and are helping our environment. It’s definitely a win-win.”
According to the National Audubon Society, the osprey was once gravely imperiled but has undergone a tremendous resurgence in recent years.
