Scam Warning

phoneA warning for Mississippi Power customers; con artists are making more calls to customers demanding money. It’s an ongoing problem that threatens customers’ security and money.

“The scam calls are targeting residential and commercial customers, but the good news is most customers quickly realize something’s wrong, hang up and call us,” said Ronnie Page, Customer Care Center manager.

Though callers may use different approaches, most have common themes; claiming bills are overdue and threats to disconnect power if immediate payment isn’t made either over the phone or with a prepaid card.

“A recent scam even claimed the company’s computer system malfunctioned and payments were lost.  The caller then demanded cash.  That’s simply not how Mississippi Power operates,” said Page.

The most recent calls follow incidents in which callers demanded payments with Money Pak or Green Dot electronic payments. Mississippi Power will never ask a customer to pay bills in this manner.

“Our customer service representatives report suspected fraud right away and work to ensure our customers don’t fall victim to scam artists,” said Page

The best advice to anyone who gets a call demanding payment or personal information, hang up and report it to local law enforcers and call Mississippi Power at 1-800-532-1502.
