This week marks National Fire Prevention Week, with a special focus on fire alarms. According to the National Fire Protection Association, nearly half of all house fires are reported between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., when most people are asleep. Having a fire alarm that can be heard easily from the bedroom could help save lives in the event of a fire. Here are just a few ways to prevent house fires:

  • Inspect electrical wiring, and have all electrical work done by a qualified electrician
  • Examine appliances and electronic equipment for old and broken plugs and cords
  • Check that electrical sockets aren’t overburdened
  • Keep flammable items away from appliances and outlets
  • Don’t overload circuit breakers or power outlets
  • Plug major electrical appliances directly into the wall outlet
  • Have your interior AC coils cleaned and replace your return air filters regularly

Install fire alarms within ear shot of bedrooms is the biggest precaution you can take to keep your family safe if a house fire occurs. It is also recommended to have at least two family fire drills a year, and have the fire department’s phone number easily accessible.
