Mississippi Power’s herculean effort to restore electric service after Hurricane Katrina was recognized Monday night by Hands On Mississippi at the organization’s first-ever Volunteer Awards Gala and 10-Year Anniversary event.
The company, along with nine other organizations and individuals, was honored at the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum in Biloxi for outstanding volunteer service and community leadership in the wake of the storm.
“Already considered a community leader, Mississippi Power recommitted its efforts in community and economic development, improving education, and protecting our environmental and natural resources,” said Hands On Mississippi Executive Director Holly Gibbs.
Community Development Director Tommy Murphy accepted the award on behalf of Mississippi Power.
“We are citizens of each and every community we serve,” he said.
After Katrina, Mississippi Power’s 1,200 employees managed a team of 12,000 workers from all over the nation and world to help restore power to those who could receive it in just 12 days.
