For many in the Meridian/Kemper County area, the Thanksgiving holiday is a little brighter as two Mississippi Power volunteer groups recently distributed more than 20,000 pounds of food.
Hands On Mississippi hosted the two events.
On Nov. 12, the Kemper/Plant Ratcliffe Chapter of Community Connection partnered with Liberty Fuels to distribute 10,000 pounds of food. A day later, another 10,000 pounds was passed out to 300 families.
Volunteers from Mississippi Power, Regions Bank, Community Bank, Meridian Community College, Loves Kitchen and ATMOS Energy all chipped in to help.
“It’s a community effort for a great cause,” said Tommy Jackson, Newton office district manager.
Last spring, a similar effort by these two Community Connection chapters gave away 15,000 pounds of food to more than 600 area residents.
