Renew Our Rivers to be featured on Gulf South Outdoors

Mississippi Power’s award-winning environmental stewardship program, Renew Our Rivers, will be the focus of the Sept. 24 edition of Gulf South Outdoors, a television program primarily focused on fishing in the northern Gulf of Mexico and other outdoor activities.

Renew Our Rivers cleanups held on Gulfport Lake and the Pascagoula River in 2014 will be chronicled, with the episode also featuring interviews with Mississippi Power CEO Ed Holland and Vice President of Corporate Services and Community Relations Johnny Atherton, Department of Marine Resources Executive Director Jamie Miller and Eco-Tours of South Mississippi CEO Kathy Wilkinson.

“Gulf South Outdoors is a show that highlights the beauty and recreational opportunities that we are so fortunate to have in south Mississippi,” said show host Frank Wilem. “I was impressed at the dedication of the Mississippi Power volunteers who are passionately committed to making our coastal waterways as beautiful as they can be. We should all be thankful that programs like this are helping clean our environment.”

At five events in 2015, more than 270 volunteers helped remove more than more than 3.8 tons of trash from Deer Island, Back Bay Biloxi, Chunky River, and the Okatoma River. Later this fall, three more events are set for Gulfport Lake, the Lower Pascagoula River, and Boley Creek in Picayune.

Since the program began in 2005, Mississippi Power volunteers have removed more than 298.5 tons of debris from south Mississippi waterways. Gulf South Outdoors airs on WXXV (FOX – Gulfport) – Thursday at 9:30 p.m. and Sunday at 10 a.m.
