Knight Nonprofit Center rewarded for energy efficiency effort

The Knight Nonprofit Center in Gulfport was recently presented a $12,705 incentive check as part of Mississippi Power’s energy efficiency quick-start programs.

The company’s large commercial/industrial business program helps organizations save energy and money by providing no-cost facility improvement recommendations and financial incentives based on energy savings.

“A deeper understanding of the technical and financial benefits of energy efficiency investments really helps our partners make their decision to improve the comfort and productivity of their commercial facility,” said Energy Efficiency Team Leader Ben Doughman. “While the program is designed to help our large commercial customers use energy wisely, it also reduces the ecological and community impact of the facility’s operations.”

The Knight Nonprofit Center participated in the program by converting 1,302 bulbs to LED bulbs throughout the facility. The high-efficiency LED bulbs will save approximately 223,203 kWhs per year, equaling the amount of greenhouse gas emissions from 32 passenger vehicles, according to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency calculations.

“The new lighting not only saves us money, but it’s also high-quality lighting. As a nonprofit organization, using resources wisely is of high importance,” said Shelby Fox, director of operations for the center.

Offered by Mississippi Power, the program works to provide energy efficiency solutions to residential customers, commercial businesses and governmental organizations.

The Knight Nonprofit Center was purchased in 2007 and is named in recognition of the Knight Foundation’s generous grant to buy and renovate the building.

The center is home to more than 30 nonprofit agencies and is jointly owned by United Way of South Mississippi, Mississippi Gulf Coast Chamber of Commerce Foundation, Gulf Coast Community Foundation and the Gulf Coast Business Council Research Foundation.
