Mississippi Power ready for cold snap this week

While it’s not the polar vortex, Mississippi Power is prepared for the season’s first extended period of cold weather.

Much like other weather events the company is accustomed to, a period of sub-freezing weather can cause widespread power outages. Company employees have been monitoring the forecast and are prepared to meet any needs that may occur as a result of the cold weather.

Monday morning low temperatures dipped below freezing as far south as the Gulf Coast. In Meridian, the morning low was 23 degrees with 11 hours below freezing. More chilly readings are forecast through Wednesday morning.

While temperatures are predicted to warm by mid-week, another cold front is expected to impact the service territory by the weekend.

With that in mind, company officials say now is the time to remember cost-saving energy tips such as:

• Set thermostats at 68 degrees in the winter. You can expect a 3 percent to 5 percent increase in energy use for every degree you set the thermostat higher in the winter. Also consider installing a programmable thermostat.

• Properly insulate attic, walls and floors. We recommend R-30 for the attic, R-19 for floors and R-13 for walls or local building codes, whichever is higher.

• Check caulk and weather stripping around your windows and doors. If the caulk is cracked or the weather-stripping is flat or peeling, replace the old material. Seal other air leakage points around wiring, plumbing attic access and fireplace flues. Use caulk for small holes and expanding foam for larger areas.
