Mississippi Power storm crew prepared to assist with Hurricane Matthew restoration efforts

Mississippi Power storm crews are answering the call to help a sister company in need.

A team of 75 line personnel and 18 support members is preparing to leave Saturday morning from staging areas all over the service territory to aid Georgia Power with restoration efforts in the wake of Hurricane Matthew.

A staging site logistics crew of six was set to leave for Waycross, Ga., on Friday afternoon.

As of Friday morning, the strong storm had not made landfall but so far it has caused widespread power outages along the east coast of Florida. It is forecast to affect Georgia, South Carolina and possibly North Carolina over the weekend.

Mississippi Power’s storm team is preliminarily assigned to Georgia’s coastal region, but that is subject to change, depending on the storm’s path and impact.

“The synergy that exists between us and our sister utility is phenomenal,” said Distribution Manager and Team Leader Melvin Roland. “We consider it an honor to assist those who are trying to restore their lives, whether it’s a minor storm or a major storm.”

Last month, storm crews aided in restoration efforts in Georgia following the passage of Hurricane Hermine.

Mississippi Power will provide updates, photos and videos of the crew’s work. Follow the coverage on Newscenter, as well as the company’s Facebook and Twitter feeds.

(Updated at 10:45 a.m. to reflect increase in the crew’s number and also that a staging site logistics team is leaving Friday afternoon.)
