Mississippi Power and its employees have a legacy of supporting the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life events across southeast Mississippi and the fight against the disease.
In 2016, employees from across the company’s 23-county service territory will once again be serving in leadership capacities at Relay events from the Coast to Meridian and all points in-between.
“Every one of us is here today because cancer has touched our lives,” Mississippi Power President and CEO Anthony Wilson said to employees who attended the kickoff supporting the Harrison County Relay For Life set for May 6 in Gulfport. “I bet we could go around the room and all of us could share a story that is both personal and painful.”
Wilson served as chairman of the American Cancer Society’s 100-year Birthday Bash in Atlanta in 2013.
“Our stories may have led us here today, but I think our real ‘purpose’ is because we have a desire for a cancer-free world – and we want to do our part to make that a reality,” Wilson told the group, which volunteered to help at the Harrison County event.
About a dozen Relay For Life events are scheduled in Mississippi Power’s service area between April and June. Each is supported by the company and its employees through some combination of financial, logistic and/or volunteer efforts.
Community Connection chapters – Mississippi Power’s employee-based volunteer organization – have already been actively raising funds for the events including raffles for split the pots, date nights, fishing gear and coolers. Various meals and t-shirt sales are also helping to raise money.
Each Relay For Life event is special to its community, but the movement’s true power lies in the combined commitment of the participants, volunteers and supporters to help the American Cancer Society save lives from cancer.
