Mississippi Power officially added renewable energy to its generation mix in 2017 when three partner-owned solar plants began operating.
The company currently has nearly 105 MW of solar capacity and is the state’s largest partner in renewable energy.
The three facilities have generated more than 22 million kWh – enough to power more than 14,500 homes – since they began operating last year. Mississippi Power receives all energy and associated renewable energy credits produced by these facilities, which it may use to serve customers with solar energy or sell to third parties.
“These three facilities have performed as expected in their first year of operation,” Renewable Energy Projects Manager Tony Smith said. “We are leading the future of energy in Mississippi with these solar plants.”
The generating plant in Sumrall, a partnership with DEPCOM Power and D.E. Shaw Renewable Investments, has generated more than 12.6 million kWh since June 2017.
The solar plant at the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport, a partnership with Hannah Solar and the U.S. Navy, has generated more than 581,000 kWh since January 2017.
The facility in Hattiesburg, a partnership with Silicon Ranch, has generated nearly 9 million kWh since October 2017.
In August 2017, the company and Silicon Ranch received unanimous PSC approval to construct and operate a 52.5 MW solar facility in Lauderdale County. The facility is scheduled to begin operating in December 2019.
Mississippi Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company (NYSE: SO), produces safe, reliable and environmentally responsible energy for more than 187,000 customers in 23 southeast Mississippi counties. With nearly 160 megawatts of approved solar energy capacity, Mississippi Power is the largest partner in providing renewable energy in the state of Mississippi.
