Gulfport, Miss. – Mississippi Power today announced the recipients of the 2018 Heritage Scholarships. Eight minority students throughout the company’s service area will be receiving tuition for career and technical education programs at accredited community college programs in Mississippi.

Mississippi Power introduced the Heritage Scholarship program in 2016 as a part of its commitment to building a strong, diverse workforce in the state. The program was developed to provide career and technical education opportunities to minority high school seniors entering programs such as instrumentation and controls, process operations and specialized lineman training.

“Our company has a long history of enhancing educational opportunities in the communities we serve,” said Mississippi Power President and CEO Anthony Wilson. “Education and workforce development are key components of our company’s vision for a thriving community and providing career opportunities to minorities allows us to build a diverse pipeline for Mississippi’s future workforce.”

Scholarships will fund tuition for each semester per student at a maximum of $1,500 per semester. The recipients were selected among all applicants for their achievements in academics and their involvement in their communities.

This year’s scholarship recipients – representing both traditional and non-traditional students – elected to attend career and technical education programs at Pearl River Community College and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (MGCCC).

“Career and technical programs are critical to our state’s workforce,” said MGCCC President Dr. Mary Graham. “We are excited about our continued partnership with Mississippi Power and its commitment to providing scholarships to minority students interested in these vital programs. We know that this will help increase awareness of career and technical education programs and support diversity in our enrollment.”
