Subtropical Storm Alberto is approaching the Gulf of Mexico

The National Hurricane Center has given a name to the first tropical disturbance of 2018 – one week before the official start of the Atlantic hurricane season on June 1.

Subtropical Storm Alberto “has become better defined and thunderstorm activity has also increased and become better organized.”

“Regardless of the tropical development of this storm, we are going to see a lot of rain in South Mississippi this weekend,” Senior Systems Analyst Jason Plummer said. “Currently, there’s anywhere from 4-to-8 inches of rain predicted, but areas caught under slow moving bands could see even more rainfall. Severe thunderstorm will be possible and tornados can’t be ruled out.”

The NHC added that “a tropical depression or storm is likely to form by Saturday over the northwestern Caribbean Sea or the southeastern Gulf of Mexico.”

Employees should be mindful of changing weather conditions over the next several days, including any outdoor plans to celebrate Memorial Day.
