Mississippi Power, Electrify America and Simon Property Group will be hosting a first-charging ceremony on Thursday at Gulfport Premium Outlets to celebrate the installation of a new state-of-the-art electric vehicle (EV) charging station.
The station is the first Simon property in the United States with an Electrify America charging system, which features the first-ever certified cooled-cable 350 kilowatt (kW) chargers in the country. A 350-kW charger can charge a vehicle at speeds up to 20 miles per minute – seven times faster than today’s most commonly used 50-kW fast chargers.
“Mississippi Power is pleased to help develop the first charging location in this initiative and we look forward to aiding the growth of electric vehicles in the region,” said Faulk.
In conjunction with the ceremony, Mississippi Power’s marketing team will host an electric vehicle showcase for the public.
“We want to educate our customers on the benefits of driving electric. This event gives drivers the opportunity to speak with experts one-on-one and explore a variety of electric vehicles up close,” said Rose Ann Pegoda, Marketing Services’ Team Leader.
Gulfport Premium Outlets will have six DC Fast Chargers with a range in power from 50 kW up to 350 kW. The charging station will offer a CHAdeMO (50-kW) connector, plus additional dual-handle chargers with CCS1 (150 kW or 350 kW) connectors, ensuring that all fast-charging-capable cars will be able to use the Electrify America stations.
Mississippi Power is providing the electricity for the station and was instrumental in the installation process, which took approximately eight weeks.
“Gulfport Premium Outlets is a prime location as it offers EV drivers a number of amenities,” said Brendan Jones, chief operating officer of Electrify America. “We will be partnering with Simon on a number of locations across the U.S., and we’re so glad to have Gulfport as the first. We hope that it will provide a great service to the community and increase people’s interest in zero emissions vehicles.”
The Gulfport Premium Outlets charging station is part of Electrify America’s $370 million investment to install electric vehicle charging infrastructure by the end of June 2019. The company plans a total investment of $2 billion in electric vehicle infrastructure, education and access programs over 10 years.
The electric vehicle showcase will begin at 11 a.m., followed by the first-charging ceremony at 2 p.m. Both events are open to the public.
