Mississippi Power offers storm preparation tips

Gulfport, Miss. – As Tropical Depression Fred continues moving across the Southeast and a pair of tropical systems – Grace and Henri – have formed, Mississippi Power is encouraging customers that now is the time to review your family’s 2021 storm plan and secure any needed supplies.

“August and September are typically the peak months of the Atlantic hurricane season,” Mississippi Power Storm Director Randall Pinkston said. “We work all year to make sure our employees are prepared to respond when our customers need us the most. While South Mississippi isn’t currently in the forecasted path for Grace or Henri, we hope our customers will take some time this week to review their family storm plan.”

Mississippi Power customers are encouraged to visit the company’s Storm Center and sign up for Outage Alerts, which notify them of an outage at their home or business. They will receive another notification when service has been restored.

Additional severe weather tips for customers include:

  • Install a smart phone app that will alert you to severe weather in the area.
  • Prepare a storm kit that includes flashlights, batteries, water, and nonperishable food items.
  • Charge cell phones, tablets and other electronic devices before the severe weather moves in.
  • Know how to safely operate your generator.

As a member of the Southeast Electric Exchange’s Mutual Assistance Program, Mississippi Power has access to request additional line crews, engineers and support personnel from utilities across the country should a tropical system impact the company’s service territory.

“Following Hurricane Zeta last year, nearly 1,700 personnel from 20 states supported our restoration efforts until every light was back on for our customers,” Pinkston said. “We will put every resource available to us into restoring service as quickly and safely as possible.”
