Mississippi Power partners with FABLAB and Girl Scouts

Mississippi Power engineers volunteered their time on Saturday teaching some eager Girl Scouts how to build a solar energy kit.

The company’s Community Development and Marketing teams partnered with the FABLAB and Girl Scouts to make the event come to life. Engineers Vivian Rodriguez, Ciara Brewer and Haley Brisolara were happy to support the project.

“I love participating in events like this,” said Rodriguez. “It’s so rewarding seeing young girls get excited about STEM and especially about energy! We’re happy to help them learn and become more passionate about science.”

13 Girl Scouts participated in Saturday’s event. They learned the concepts of parallel circuits, solar systems and how solar energy is converted to DC power to operate a fan while they built their own solar energy kit.

“The girls were so intrigued to hear stories from Mississippi Power engineers and learn more about what they do,” said FABLAB Coordinator Mia Coursey. “Vivian, Ciara and Haley were great role models, and we were excited to have them participate.”

The Jackson County facility offers a variety of educational programs and initiatives for local students to get immersed in STEM subjects.

“We have a strong relationship with the FABLAB and have partnered with the Girl Scouts before, so this was a Win/Win for us,” said Community Development Representative Ann Holland. “We’ll continue to look for any opportunity to promote the energy industry.”
