New Safety City program goes virtual

Students in Mississippi Power’s service territory are learning about electrical safety in a new virtual setting.

The company’s Safety City program has launched its virtual studio this month with hopes to teach even more children and adults about electrical safety.

Presenters Michelle Chinn, Lynette Brown and Candace Labat from the Risk Services team are offering one-hour virtual presentations to fourth and fifth graders via Zoom, Google Meet and Teams.

“Historically, we’ve only provided face-to-face safety presentations, however, by providing a new virtual option, we now have easier and broader access for all parties seeking safety information or training,” said Chinn. “This allows us to expand our partnerships and our commitment to safety to the public while still providing excellent resources.”

Safety City is an interactive presentation that includes videos, a Q&A session and toolkits and bags for teachers and students. While the program is currently targeted for elementary students, the end in mind is for the program to expand to all grades as well as first responders in our service territory. Safety City presentations can also still be held in person upon request.

“We’re thrilled with the positive feedback we’ve received so far, and are continuously adding presentations to our calendar,” said Labat. “It’s been great to grow Safety City in this way and see its real-life impacts on our customers and community partners.”
