Renew Our Rivers cleans up Gulfport Lake

Mississippi Power employees from Plant Watson and the company’s Coast Division spent their day cleaning up Gulfport Lake and Bayou Bernard as part of the Renew Our Rivers program.

The 45 volunteers removed approximately one ton of debris from the area.

“This program is about making a difference in our community and cleaning our waterways,” said Mississippi Power Environmental Affairs Director Michael Harvey. “Our focus is not only on beautification, but also safety as debris can be a hazard to local boaters.”

This is the 15th year of the Renew of Rivers program and during that time volunteers have removed more than 400 tons of debris from waterways in the company’s service territory.

Community partners from today’s clean-up included Seaway Marine Center, Harrison County Beautification Commission, Geosyntec Consultants, Waste Management, KEMRON and Harrison County Sheriff’s Department.

“We had a passionate group of volunteers today,” said Plant Watson Chemist and Renew Our Rivers Coordinator PJ Wylie. “We consider these waterways our most valuable asset here in South Mississippi, so we are here to make sure they stay safe and beautiful.”

This was the first clean-up of Gulfport Lake and Bayou Bernard since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
