This weekend, Mississippi Power sponsored and participated in Celebrate Sister’s first Bridge to STEM Workshop.
Celebrate Sisters Foundation is a nonprofit organization, specializing in mentorship and scholarships for girls in the sixth through twelfth grade. The workshop was designed to provide their students with hands-on STEM education and guidance, specifically for girls of color.
Engineers from across the company presented two iCan Girls in Engineering exercises. The chemical engineering exercise included having students create their own lip gloss and bath salts.
Students participating in the civil engineering exercise designed their own high heels and walked the runway to showcase their creations.
“It’s so important that we have an increasing representation of women in STEM related careers, especially in our industry,” said Diversity and Inclusion Manager Kim Washington.
"By doing these workshops, we’re able to really make a difference and reach the female future of STEM directly.”
Mississippi Power Foundation donated $1,500 to Celebrate Sisters to support their Bridge to STEM scholarship and additional STEM opportunities for diverse young women.
The next iCan Girls in Engineering event will be held June 19 at BEST Summer Girls Camp.
