Mississippi Power sponsors educators for state-wide teacher conference
The Mississippi Power Foundation recently provided sponsorships for 150 local educators to attend the 10th annual Making Connections Conference in Biloxi.
Hosted by S-RESA, the annual conference is a way for educators across the state of Mississippi to grow their professional network, learn innovative and strategic teaching practices, and gain new resources for the upcoming school year.
The company has sponsored teachers every year, awarding more than 1,000 Allan Barton scholarships collectively to teachers focusing on STEM subjects in Mississippi Power’s service territory since its inception.
“I’m very thankful for Mississippi Power because it’s been several years since I’ve been able to attend the conference,” said Maria Rankin, Bay Springs High School science teacher.
“I’ve been teaching for 20 years now, and I’m excited to learn new things and strategies I can take back to my students.”
Mississippi Power Foundation Executive Director and Community Development and Corporate Giving Manager Steven Dick provided opening remarks for the conference, welcoming attendees and sharing the company’s appreciation for educators and the work they do.
“We at Mississippi Power appreciate the hard work, dedication and sacrifice teachers make on a daily basis,” Dick said.
“Education is critical to the success of this high-demanding world, and you play a vital role in helping prepare students for the next challenges they will face.”
Prior to the conference, several Community Connection volunteers assembled more that 1,500 conference bags for registered attendees.
