Storm strong for you: Mississippi Power strengthens service territory for 2023 hurricane season
Mississippi Power has prepared its service territory for the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season and urges its customers to review their family storm plan before the season’s official start on June 1.
Mississippi Power employees have worked a variety of weather events in recent years including tornados, ice storms and tropical systems. The company’s storm directors also recently met for a final review of the company’s storm plan and employees’ unique storm roles.
“At Mississippi Power, storm season is year-round, and we are always working to reduce the impact storms have on our customers,” said Distribution General Manager and Storm Director Melvin Roland. “The work we’re doing to improve our reliability and resiliency will also minimize outages caused by those frequent summer thunderstorms.”
Currently, nearly 85 percent of Mississippi Power customers are on a self-healing network. This smart technology allows for outages to be shorter and more isolated for our customers. The company is continually hardening our power delivery system against weather events by installing concrete poles in strategic locations and raising substations above possible flood waters.
With a forecasted 13-15 named storms this hurricane season, customers should take time now to prepare their homes and families in the case of a possible impact.

Tips include:
- Building an emergency kit
- Following proper generator safety protocols
- Stocking food, water and vital medications
- Creating and reviewing a family safety plan, including an evacuation route
