In addition to meeting Mississippi Power’s highest demand in 11 years and achieving system-leading reliability in 2023, the company’s Generation fleet has now been recognized by the Southeastern Electric Exchange for the Top Safety Performance in the Fossil & Hydro Generation category.
Plant Daniel Manager Tiffany Mackin accepted the award today on behalf of the company at the SEE annual convention in Dallas.
“It’s an honor to represent the hard-working men and women of our Generation team whose commitment to Safety First every day on every task resulted in this award,” Mackin said. “We faced many unique challenges last year and to make it through each of those safely is a remarkable achievement everyone should be proud of.”
The safety performance of employees at plants Daniel, Ratcliffe, Watson and the Chevron Cogen last year included no recordable or serious injuries as well as no recordable vehicle accidents.
“I think this honor is a testament to the outstanding safety culture we have at Mississippi Power,” said Vice President and Senior Production Officer Mike Smith. “We are a learning organization where we take each near-miss or incident as a gift and learn from it. We empower our employees to exercise stop work authority when something doesn’t feel right. We continually talk about safety to ensure we keep it our top priority.”
The biggest challenge for Generation in 2023 came during the record heat wave in August when temperatures topped 95 degrees 28 times in a 31-day stretch. On Aug. 14, the company hit its highest customer demand since the summer of 2012.
The SEE has been recognizing companies for their achievements in safety since 1995 across five categories – Total Company, Fossil & Hydro Generation, Nuclear Generation, Transmission & Distribution, and Fleet.
