Mississippi Power employees participate in JSU Southern Company Takeover Day

Mississippi Power Engineer Antrell Altman and Communications Specialist Halle Coleman recently represented the company at Jackson State University’s Southern Company Takeover Day.

Altman and Coleman spent the day alongside Alabama Power Recruiting Consultant Demetrius Jackson promoting Southern Company and encouraging careers in energy.

The group began the day conducting classroom visits throughout the College of Business and College of Science, Technology, and Engineering. There, they introduced students to the company’s culture and values, spoke about their roles and answered additional questions students had.

During lunch, information stations were set up in the cafeteria and student center where Altman, Coleman and Jackson continued recruiting efforts and spoke one-on-one with interested students.

“It’s always exciting to visit my alma mater,” said Altman. “Being able to talk to students about engineering and the culture of Southern Company is something I look forward to every year.”

Following lunch, an alumni panel was held where Altman and Coleman spoke to students about their journeys to becoming Mississippi Power employees and their experiences as alumni in the workforce.

Altman graduated from Jackson State in 2018 with his Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering. He recalled his time as a member of the Sonic Boom of the South, and how the leadership and communication skills he learned during that time helped prepare him for his role now as an engineer.

Coleman graduated from Jackson State in 2022 with her Bachelor of Science in journalism and media studies. She advised students to network and maintain the relationships they’ve built. She shared her testimony of starting with the company as a public relations intern in 2021 and returning in 2023 as a full-time employee within the same department.

"Returning to Jackson State is not only a way for me to give back to the place that helped shape me, but also an opportunity to discover and nurture students who are looking to join the workforce and pursue a career in energy," said Coleman.

Employees completed the day with resume reviews, and prepared students for the upcoming Spring Career Expo where Southern Company will be recruiting and conducting onsite interviews.

“Today was extremely helpful,” said junior electrical engineering major Cole Cox. “I appreciate Southern Company for visiting our school, pouring information into us and actually dedicating time to making sure we’re set up for success.”
