Mississippi Power employees volunteer for Disability Pride Month

In honor of Disability Pride Month, several employees from Mississippi Power’s Plant Ratcliffe volunteered time and resources at The Refuge, a nonprofit organization in Philadelphia serving as a safe and supporting day program for adults with special needs.

Employees provided lunch for the group, including staff members, and spent quality time interacting with each member of The Refuge, known as “Friends.” After lunch, employees introduced an inclusive arts-and-crafts exercise and worked with the group to complete it. The activity is now displayed on-site.

“Our group really enjoyed spending time with our Friends at The Refuge,” said Senior Compliance and Support Specialist Corey Luke. “As we recognize the importance of celebrating our differences and fostering an inclusive environment for us all, we wanted to be intentional about making sure these members knew how much we value them in our community.”

Brooke Crenshaw, Founder and Executive Director of The Refuge, said Mississippi Power volunteers helped engage the organization’s members and develop their social engagement by promoting useful life skills.

“We are so grateful for the support and love the Mississippi Power employees showed to our Friends at The Refuge. With July being a focus of celebrating and including individuals with disabilities, our Friends felt nothing less,” said Crenshaw. “The engagement, lunch and inclusive activity provided by Mississippi Power employees reminded our Friends how important they are to our community, which continues to shed light on where work is still needed in our community. Thank you again for including The Refuge and Friends and striving to make a difference in their lives.”
