Mississippi Power prepares students for new school year
Gulfport, Miss. – Mississippi Power employees across the company’s service territory donated school supplies to ensure students had a bright start to the year.
Volunteers from the company’s Community Connection chapters spent time collecting and donating much-needed supplies to families ahead of the first day of school.
Mississippi Power employee volunteers in Meridian partnered with United Way of East Mississippi to donate, collect and distribute more than $65,000 worth of donated school supplies to 16 public elementary schools across Meridian and Lauderdale, Clarke, Kemper and Neshoba counties.
“I want to give a special thank-you to our partners at Mississippi Power for perpetually volunteering year after year to make sure we can deliver supplies to every upper and lower elementary school in four counties,” said United Way of East Mississippi Executive Director and CEO Kym Parnell. “Not only do we have the privilege of having employees volunteering, but they also donate and come in to pick everything up. Thank you all for being a part of that. Thank you, Mississippi Power, for constantly living united.”
The company’s Jackson-George Community Connection chapter participated in the annual Moss Point Back to School Rally and donated 350 one-inch binders for students. Meanwhile, volunteers from the Coast, Watson and General Office chapters of Community Connection donated 80 backpacks filled with school supplies to students attending the Youth of Tomorrow Summer Enrichment Camp in Gulfport. Employees also partnered with United Way of South Mississippi for their Fill the Bus campaign where they donated dozens of school supplies items to the organization.
In the Pine Belt, employees purchased, stuffed and delivered 40 backpacks filled with pencils, rulers and pencil pouches to lighten the load for parents by providing students with appropriate gear and other learning necessities.
“We certainly want to help students be better prepared to learn, so this was a great opportunity to give back to our community,” said Laurel Area Manager Jake White. “Through our donation, we hope to make going back to school more manageable for children and parents.”
