Mississippi Power hosts food drives, donates $100,000 to Extra Table in honor of its centennial MLK Day of Service
Gulfport, Miss. – Mississippi Power hosted three food drives across its service territory today and donated $100,000 to fight food insecurity in honor of the company’s centennial MLK Day of Service.
“As we continue to commemorate our centennial year, we recognize the impact Martin Luther King Jr. made and want to honor his work with our own service to the community,” said Mississippi Power President and CEO Anthony Wilson. “Our employees are committed to strengthening the places we call home, and this day is a reminder of the difference we can make when we work together.”
Mississippi Power’s MLK Day of Service is an annual event for the company, with employees describing the holiday as a “day on” and an opportunity to give back to those in need with hands-on community service. This year, more than 500 Mississippi Power employees and their family members distributed more than 2,000 meal boxes to Gulfport, Hattiesburg and Meridian.
The company partnered with Extra Table, a local nonprofit food bank that distributes food to more than 60 pantries across the state.
“Extra Table is committed to fighting hunger in Mississippi, and we wouldn’t be able to accomplish that mission without partners like Mississippi Power,” said Extra Table Executive Director Martha Allen Price. “We appreciate the dedication of Mississippi Power employees for showing up today and getting these meals into the hands of people who need them the most.”
Additionally, the Mississippi Power Foundation is working with Extra Table to distribute funding to food pantries in local communities across the company’s service territory.
“The Mississippi Power Foundation looks for opportunities every day to bolster our communities and partner with organizations that make a direct, local impact,” said Mississippi Power Vice President of External Affairs and Customer Growth Giff Ormes. “Our MLK Day of Service is the kickoff to what I know will be another impactful year of service to our communities in 2025.”
