Gulfport, Miss. - Mississippi Power volunteers spent the day cleaning debris out of Gulfport Lake as part of the company’s Renew Our Rivers program.
The timing of this cleanup lined up with the aftermath of Hurricane Francine, and employees were eager to remove trash and other storm debris from the lake.
“This is a popular waterway used regularly by residents, so we want to make sure it stays clean and safe for boaters,” said Operations Specialist Phillip Barrett. “Any time we have a storm in the area, that means there is more opportunity for debris to make its way into the water. Our team knew it was even more important to get out on the lake and remove as much as we could.”
More than two tons of debris was collected including lawn furniture, tires, buckets and other plastic items.
Mississippi Power’s Renew Our Rivers clean-ups happen all across the state throughout the year and to date, employees have removed more than 400 tons of debris from Mississippi’s waterways.
“This is just one way our employees serve our communities and it’s always exciting to see how much debris we can get out of our rivers, lakes and the Gulf each year,” said Environmental Specialist PJ Wylie. “It’s great to see how many are passionate about environmental stewardship and continue to come back year after year.”
The Renew Our Rivers program will continue with a clean-up at Henderson Point scheduled next.
