Gulfport NAACP honors Mississippi Power CEO Anthony Wilson for outstanding community service
Gulfport, Miss. – The Gulfport chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) recently honored Mississippi Power CEO Anthony Wilson with an award for his leadership and the company’s outstanding community service.
Gulfport NAACP Chapter Chairman Gary Fredericks specifically spoke to Wilson’s presence in the community during his time leading Mississippi Power. He also thanked him for his work in helping to change the previous state flag as chair of the Mississippi Economic Council.
"Anthony, you have been a true champion in the effort to change Mississippi's state flag, demonstrating your strong morals and character. You undertook that effort not just because it was timely, but because it was right,” said Fredericks. “We deeply appreciate your engagement with our community during your presidency. You have been approachable, fair and unbiased, making a significant difference through your community service."
A campaign for the new state flag, titled “It’s Time,” provided support for the state legislature to respond with a series of historic votes to take down the old flag and to create a newly designed flag to be approved by voters.
Mississippi Power was one of the first companies to fly the new flag, showing corporate support leading up to the November 2020 referendum. The “In God We Trust” design was overwhelmingly approved by Mississippi voters and signed into law on Jan. 11, 2021.
