Mississippi Power hosts ribbon-cutting for rebuilt Bayou Casotte substation
Mississippi Power and the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday to celebrate the recently rebuilt Bayou Casotte substation on Industrial Road in Pascagoula.
“We know that Pascagoula and Jackson County are flourishing and experiencing great growth and economic development,” said Mississippi Power Transmission General Manager Stephen Schruff. “We designed this substation to have space for a second transformer to accommodate growth and meet the future needs of our customers.”
The company is celebrating its centennial this year, and the Bayou Casotte substation has been in operation for nearly 70 of those 100 years.
“One of the critical components of attracting, retaining and expanding business and industry is the availability of reliable power,” said George Freeland, executive director of the Jackson County Economic Development Foundation. “Mississippi Power is a trusted and tremendous energy partner and their forward thinking on this project ensures this area will have its electricity needs met today and long into our future.”
Schruff also highlighted the planning that went into the 12-month project as well as the extensive work that was performed safely and without interruption to customers.
The Bayou Casotte work included:
- Distribution improvements so the load could be rerouted through the Moss Point Elder Ferry substation during construction
- Transmission lines temporarily bypassing the Bayou Casotte substation
- Demolishing the old site and rebuilding to updated standards
- Elevating the control house as part of continued storm-hardening efforts
“This is not a typical Chamber ribbon-cutting, but it is very fitting because this new facility is critical to powering businesses, homes and future growth here for decades,” said Paige Roberts, executive director of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce. “This equipment is vital to the success of our community.”
