Mississippi Power improves reliability for Bay Springs customers

Gulfport, Miss. - Mississippi Power recently enhanced reliability for customers in Bay Springs by completing a project to upgrade equipment inside the town’s substation.

“Our team’s proactive approach to this project contributes to our overall goal of improving the customer experience,” said Transmission Construction Manager Jay Halford. “By coordinating the outage during late hours and proactively notifying our customers, we ensured minimal disruption as we upgraded our reliability of service for the community.”

A proactive outage was completed at 10 p.m. on July 22, which lasted less than five minutes and minimized potential impact to customers. Prior to the outage, post cards and proactive calls were sent out to notify more than 1,750 customers of the work being completed. Employees worked through the night to ensure the first phase of the project was completed safely.

During the outage, teams installed and tied in a mobile substation into the low-side, 12 kV bus. This strategic measure was proactively taken to allow the mobile unit to serve area load for the overall project to replace aged, 70-year-old, single-phase transformers in the following weeks.

“Working through the night to integrate the mobile substation was a crucial step in modernizing our infrastructure,” said Large Construction Project Manager Stacy Perry. “This strategic project not only addresses the town’s immediate needs but also sets the foundation for future improvements in the area.”

Once finalized in the coming weeks, the effort will upgrade the substation’s bank capacity and improve the substation to adequately meet Southern Company standards. The project is a result of proactive planning, with teams collaborating seamlessly to strategically schedule outages and execute upgrades with utmost efficiency – ensuring customers’ needs are met while minimizing service disruptions.
