Multiple workgroups within Mississippi Power's Power Delivery and Division Operations work groups recently worked together to install the first medium voltage (12kV) pole-mounted harmonic filter on Mississippi Power’s distribution system for a large industrial customer in Quitman.
Harmonics are commonly associated with large motors and can introduce disturbances on our grid.
“While there are very few harmonic filters that exist on the Southern Company distribution system, this is a first of its kind project for Mississippi Power,” said Engineer Principal T.J. Hartfield. “We are happy to be able to synergize across work groups to implement a safe solution for our customer.”
Each harmonic filter is one-of-a kind and must be custom designed to meet the specific customer’s load, a process that can take up to seven months. It then must be carefully installed to ensure it effectively filters out the harmonics.
“I am very proud of the Meridian line crew for their hard work on this unique project, and it was an incredible opportunity for us to be involved in,” said Engineering Supervisor David Huckaby. “The team completed pre-work prior to the outage that proactively cut down on the customer’s outage time, were adaptable and prioritized safety.”
The filter has been successful since its installation, and it will continue to be routinely checked and analyzed.
