Mississippi Power monitoring incoming freezing temperatures

Gulfport, Miss. – Mississippi Power has been closely monitoring the cold weather blast that is forecast to move across our service territory Monday evening and is encouraging our customers to prepare their homes for a significant change in the temperature.                                                    

“Mississippi Power is ready to serve our customers through the freezing temperatures expected this week,” said Mississippi Power Spokeswoman Kaila Moran Griffith. “This is the first freeze of the season, but it’s the perfect time to prepare your home as we move into the cold weather months.

Customers can take advantage of Mississippi Power’s energy-savings toolkit – a one-stop shop that offers a full range of resources including cold-weather tips, energy-saving tools and rebates to help maximize their energy dollars.

Here are a few tips to help keep your home warm, energy-efficient and safe this week:

• Sealing air leaks around windows, doors, plumbing and light fixtures to keep cold air from entering your home.
• Remember the 4 Ps – people, pets, plants and pipes:
  • Check on your family members and neighbors.
  • Bring pets indoors.
  • Cover any outdoor plants that could be harmed by frost.
  • Cover exposed pipes and let indoor faucets drip.
• Open your blinds and curtains to let the sun help warm your home.
• Dress in warm layers and stay indoors as much as possible.
• Set your thermostat to the lowest comfortable setting to maximize your unit’s efficiency. For each degree closer to 68, you can save energy and money on your bill.
• Review all safety procedures on space heaters and only use a space heater in occupied rooms.
