Mississippi Power named UCI Communicator of the Year

Gulfport, Miss. - Mississippi Power’s Corporate Engagement team was recently named Communicator of the Year at the annual Utility Communicators International conference in Philadelphia, Pa.

The company won first place in two of the four award categories in the Better Communications Competition and finished second in another, earning the Communicator of the Year award for the seventh time, and the first time since 2006.

“The Utility Communicators International board is pleased to have presented the 2025 UCI Communicator of the Year award to Mississippi Power,” said UCI Executive Director Kelley Eldien. “UCI's Better Communications Competition has been recognizing excellence in utility communications for over 90 years and is proud to continue this long tradition as part of their annual conference. This well-deserved recognition highlights Mississippi Power's outstanding work and impactful contributions to the industry.”

Mississippi Power won first place in Creative Assets of Collateral for its centennial corporate history book and also for its campaign “There’s Power in a Place Called Home.” The company was second place in Internal Communications for the company's centennial video series.

“This is an incredible honor and achievement for our Corporate Engagement team,” said Mississippi Power Vice President of External Affairs and Customer Growth Giff Ormes. “It is very special when your peers recognize the excellent work our team produced last year, including two awards related to our centennial.”

The Better Communications Competition was held at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and featured live voting after representatives from the various utilities pitched their entries for 1-2 minutes to the attendees. Mississippi Power Communications Specialist Gareth Clary, author of the “Mississippi Power: 100 Years” book, represented the company at the conference and made the live pitches of the concepts. After the votes were collected in the four categories, the UCI board reviewed the totals and announced the winners, culminating with the Communicator of the Year award.
