Mississippi Power ready to serve customers through 2025 hurricane season

Gulfport, Miss. – Mississippi Power is ready to serve customers ahead of the Atlantic Hurricane Season that kicks off June 1.

Multiple weather sources have indicated an active hurricane season, and Mississippi Power urges its customers to prepare their homes and storm plans now.

“We’ve been responding to severe weather for more than a century, and our team remains storm-tested and committed to serving our communities,” said Vice President of Power Delivery and Division Operations Fran Forehand. “We’ve worked to add resiliency to our power delivery system, and we are well positioned to respond for our customers.”

Some of Mississippi Power’s current storm-hardening projects include replacing hundreds of wooden poles with concrete and steel, elevating substations in flood-prone areas and placing more than 96 percent of customers on an automated, self-healing network. Projects like these increase overall reliability and allow for outages to be shorter and less frequent, minimizing impact to customers. 

Mississippi Power is also engaging with industry partners and logistics organizations to ensure mutual assistance – a critical piece of the company’s storm plan – is in place.

“We encourage our customers to take the time to prepare with us now when the sun is shining,” said Forehand. “We’ve already seen several severe weather events in our service territory this year, and our customers know that we’ll be by their side preparing and responding to any tropical weather that may come our way.”

Mississippi Power recommends the following preparation tips ahead of storm season:

• Create a storm plan for your family – have a designated safe space in your home, know when and where to evacuate and plan multiple evacuation routes.
• Buy supplies like water, nonperishable food items, batteries and flashlights now to avoid a last-minute grocery store run.
• Seal any outside wall openings and repair any old or damaged areas to your home to prevent water penetration and lessen wind damage.
• Maintain landscaping and cut weak branches this spring to lessen the chance of projectiles during high winds.
