Gulfport, Miss. - Mississippi Power's Power Delivery & Division Operations team recently completed a project in the Leakesville substation involving the replacement of a 63-year-old transformer and other equipment upgrades.
Several aging structures inside the substation, both on the high and low sides of the transformer, were upgraded.
“This project was a massive collaborative effort involving several groups across Power Delivery. Our Transmission Lines team replaced the associated line switches and the poles outside of the substation were converted to concrete structures, which enhances the reliability of the incoming 115kV line,” said Substation Construction Supervisor Brandon Gill. “Our partners in Protection & Controls, the Transmission Control Center and the Distribution Control Center played crucial roles in maintaining system protection and ensuring seamless communication with our devices through the project along with all necessary switching to complete the work safely and effectively.”
Distribution crews built a low-side mobile tie, which allowed for the use of a portable substation, ensuring there were no service interruptions for our customers in the area.
“This work is a testament to our ability to synergize and coordinate across multiple workgroups,” said Local Manager Dirk Turner. “It also highlights our commitment to providing grid enhancements to our customers without them experiencing any service interruptions.”
