Mississippi Power is prepared to meet customer demand as Arctic blast moves across the country

Gulfport, Miss. – With temperature forecasts below 20 degrees over the Christmas weekend across southeast Mississippi, Mississippi Power is prepared to meet customer demand as families gather to celebrate.

From a Generation perspective, all available units will be used to provide power to customers. The company proactively performed its winter weatherization program earlier this year to prepare Generation equipment for extended exposure to sub-freezing temperatures.

On the Power Delivery side, the company’s Transmission and Distribution teams are prepared to respond to any outages caused by winter weather. Investments into the company’s power grid have led to a more reliable and resilient system. The implementation of advanced technologies has allowed the company to storm harden our system to withstand extreme weather conditions.

Winter energy efficiency tips

Mississippi Power also offers the following tips to help customers manage their energy usage during the winter:

-       Adjust the temperature: Set your thermostat on the lowest possible comfortable setting when you are home and awake. We recommend 68 degrees in the winter.

-       Take advantage of heat from the sun: Open curtains during the day to allow sunlight to naturally heat your home.

-       Find and seal leaks: Seal any air leaks and add caulk or weather-stripping around leaky doors and windows. This will keep warm air in your house.

-       Reduce heat loss from the fireplace: Keep your fireplace damper closed unless a fire is burning.

Any Mississippi Power customer with a demonstrated financial need may be eligible to apply for Project SHARE by simply calling toll-free number 855-847-0555 to speak with a representative from Catholic Charities. The customer will be directed to a representative, who will set an appointment for the customer to provide documentation to determine the level of need.
